Accelerate and drive the adoption of Industry 4.0
Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India has set up four centres at IIT Delhi, IISc Bangalore, CMTI Bangalore and C4i4 Lab Pune. This is a national initiative named as SAMARTH Udyog and brings together Industry, Institutes, Industry Associations and the Government to invest in the program to enhance our global competitiveness. Program aims at helping manufacturers reduce costs, improve quality, and accelerate customer response.
SAMARTH (Smart Automated Manufacturing and Rapid Transformation Hub) covers a wide gamut of technologies and trends like Industrial IOT, additive manufacturing (3D Printing), advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, cloud computing, cybersecurity, simulation, system integration, analytics etc. These centres will provide awareness and education on some of these smart manufacturing technologies, implementing ideas at the manufacturing floor and developing capabilities with manufacturers to innovate and compete.
With a focus on building manufacturing sector, the centres will also support developing talent pool in the field of Smart Manufacturing and Data Analytics. These centres are mandated to develop ecosystem by bringing together manufacturing companies, system integrators, hardware and technology providers.
To begin with, C4i4 Lab will focus its activities in the automotive and engineering clusters. C4i4 Lab has set its vision “To establish a world-class centre for promoting innovation and adoption of Industry 4.0 solutions”.
Cyber-physical systems are leading the manufacturing industry into the 4th industrial revolution popularly known as Industry 4.0. It has the potential to address many challenges faced by the Indian industry that hinder its global competitiveness such as perception of low quality, stiff competition on cost from other nations, low levels of innovation and limited agility to meet rapidly changing customer needs.
C4i4 Lab is focussed on creating widespread and definitive awareness of the fourth industrial revolution among the Indian companies with a special focus on the MSME/SME sector via seminars and workshops. C4i4 Lab is in the process of preparing use cases of Industry 4.0 and demonstrates the benefits to the companies in the region. It will provide access to technology and resources in order to support Industry 4.0 pilot projects in companies.
At C4I4, infrastructure facilities planned are Industrial IOT Lab, Experience Centres, Data Centre Server, Mobile Demo Kits etc. The centre plans to develop an ecosystem that nurtures and promotes Industry 4.0. This will include incubation support for start-ups, skill development in partnership with academic institutions and creating a platform for solution companies.
The C4i4 Lab Pune is set out to become a first of its kind Innovation Centre in the region focusing on Industry 4.0.
The initiatives of C4i4 Lab would not only strengthen the expertise of companies especially the SMEs in manufacturing but also help to develop a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures & drives innovation & growth. Above all, C4i4 Lab will showcase the best practices in the adoption of new technologies and drive the competitiveness of the industries in the region towards becoming benchmarks in the manufacturing world.

What are LABS?
LABs are a field of work, learning, and experimentation for the 4th generation of Industrial revolution.
Together with experts and colleagues from the various companies and organizations, you will develop ideas and solutions for questions that come as a part and parcel of industrial change.
The LABs include the following elements:
- Awareness workshops
- Implementation Support
- Readiness Assessment
- Faculty Development program
- Ecosystem Development
- Funded research program
- Participation in National Level agenda set by Government of India
